What Is Low Level Laser Therapy?
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a laser or LED light therapy that improves tissue repair (skin wounds, muscle, tendon, bone, nerves), reduces inflammation and reduces pain wherever the beam is applied.
The lasers used in LLLT are typically small (often handheld) units, and unlike surgical and aesthetic lasers, do not heat the targeted tissue. Instead, LLLT emits low levels of red and infrared light rays that are absorbed by your mitochondria (the energy-producing organelles in many of your cells), which then can increase cellular energy production and ultimately help heal surrounding tissue. This process is comparable to plant photosynthesis, during which sunlight is absorbed by plants and converted to energy for the plants to grow.
LLLT is completely safe and very effective.
Non Steroid anti inflammatory drugs slow down healing and often have side effects, LLLT on the other hand actually improves healing as well as reducing pain and inflammation. It has proven to be more effective and safer than pharmaceutical anti inflammatories across a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and also improves healing and reduces muscle fatigue, damage and Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.
So What Does It Treat?
Low Level Laser Therapy (or Photobiomodulation) is most effective in treating skin wounds, muscle, tendon, bone and nerve issues. It significantly reduces inflammation and pain wherever the beam is applied within 2 hours and has lasting analgesic effects of up to 48 hours. The healing time of chronic tendinopathies is reduced by 70%.
